A Study on Cold Hardiness , Flowering and Fruit Bearing in ¢¥ Okubo ¢¥ Peach Trees (Prunus Persica) as Affected by Defoliation

Abstract
Effect of post-harvest defoliation on ¢¥Okubo¢¥ peach trees (Prunus persica) was investigated by a manual defoliation trial designed within a single tree. Early loss of leaves resulted in reduced reserve materials and cold hardiness, the differences being remarkable as the season advanced. It also showed a poor record in the development of flower-bud, pollen germination and per cent bearing. Sugar amounts were greatly decreased by complete removal of leaves. But compositions and seasonal changes of eight kinds of sugars indentified were similar both in control and complete removal. Growth inhibitors in flower-buds were more in defoliated limbs and their decrease was more conspicuous in control. Complete removal delayed blooming by about three days. Possible relationships of cold hardiness-sugars and blooming season-plant growth substances were discussed.
